Sports Chaplaincy at Seacliff
“What do you see? …. Seacliff!!
“What is Sports Chaplaincy?”
Chaplaincy has been a significant part of Australian life and culture forever. Chaplains care for the welfare of the community in which they serve in a supportive and confidential manner.
Sports Chaplains provide healthy strategies for club communities to care for players, coaches and members who can occasionally struggle to connect. Sports Chaplaincy Australia takes a fresh approach with meaningful and emotional engagement.
SCA members are trusted and trained men and women from all States in Australia who have extensive experience and credentials in sports pastoral care. SCA has over 30 years experience serving sport at the highest level.
“Why Sports Chaplaincy @ Seacliff?”
Appointing a Sports Chaplain to Seacliff Surf is being proactive. The club Management team have seen the supportive work of Chaplains operating in other clubs and States, especially through critical incidents. In their care for the future of the Seacliff Surf Lifesaving Community, the availability of one of its members already trained in this area was an opportunity not to be missed. But life isn’t just about critical incidents, like our Semaphore buddies experienced on Easter Friday. A Sports Chaplain will support the values and health of its members, families, management and volunteers in a way that will help Seacliff Surf continue to be the great club it is.
“Who is our Sports Chaplain?”
Joe Gray has been involved in Surf Lifesaving since he was 9 years old, so he values and understands the surf culture of volunteerism and competitiveness. When he was competitive, he participated predominantly in swim, R & R and beach events, but also enjoyed a season or two in boats and craft. He gained a few NZ national titles in team events and was regularly involved in finals. He was the first paid Life Guard in his district and spent 2 amazing summers full-time at the beach.
Joe took the Bronze examination again in 2016 and is looking forward to patrolling the Seacliff beach as a volunteer. Having completed the relevant Sports Chaplaincy training required in 2012, he has since been supporting Rugby South Australia, so begins at Seacliff with some good experience already.
